Their lack of animation, especially in the face (even when able to move around using arms and legs) is really inhuman, but they're still a simulacra of humanity. Does that make sense? Better said: they resemble humans enough for us to subconsciously assume that they're like us and function under the same rules, which makes it scarier when they don't and become all evil and stuff. Also, their small size kinda freaks me out too. Don't know why that is. Probably for the same reason children being evil is scary: it's a force you should be able to overpower by sheer size alone, but you can't for whatever reason. Oh and I think that ties in with my last point: a doll is a token of childhood, something that's supposed to be a safe toy you play with. When a doll takes on its own powers you don't manipulate it, it manipulates you or tries to overpower you or something.

On a literary level, there's a long precedent of children at the center of horror. Henry James's The Turn of the Screw is a good example, and there are plenty of non-classic texts I can think of as well-like V.C. Andrews's books for one. Dolls I'm not so sure about. Tears, I think there have been several examples. Actually in White Teeth, which is recent I know, there's a guy who cries bloody tears because of diabetes who also works for the nazis. Hm. And the cracked finish? Everywhere.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01633960384688852057noreply@blogger.com
